I voted…and so did nearly 120 million other people who wanted to move this nation forward. Our newly re-elected President and Commander in Chief of the United States of America, Barack Obama delivered a speech that once again sent chills through my body. I sat intensely in front of the television listening to each humbled word he spoke, graciously expressing his appreciation for his supporters, campaign staff, and most of all the love of his life, Michelle Obama.
The months, weeks and days leading up to November 6, 2012, Election Day were filled with annoying campaign ads, three debates, piles of mudslinging through the airways and cotton filled statements that often fell upon spongy ears. I dreaded turning on the television because I feared I would be body slammed by a cluster of women targeted campaign ads that spewed out trigger words like Planned Parenthood, equal pay for women, reversing legalized abortion rights, and repealing ObamaCare. First of all, no one has the right to tell any woman what she should do with her body, or when and whether she should have children. Secondly, I think the idea of women being barefoot, pregnant, uneducated, weak and passive died when the twentieth century spiraled out of the hemisphere years ago. The 40’s, 50’s and 60’s are decades behind us, and voting for the other guy would’ve warped us into a fashionably flawed time period.
I voted…yes, I did. I stood in line for nearly 3.5 hours to make my voice heard loudly across the United States. The ambiance was surreal as I observed a sea of determined, willed and fearless citizens standing quietly in the cold awaiting their turn to stamp their imprint in history. No one knew the outcome, and we all proudly smiled, acknowledging the obvious high numbers of voter participation across the country.
When I entered the polling booth, I selected President Barack Obama’s ticket because I want continued leadership from a man who doesn’t enforce personal beliefs on Americans, but chooses to enforce fairness and equality for each individual. Whether the issues that lie before us are related to healthcare, foreign policy, equality or just plain common sense, the man with a clarified and detailed plan got my vote – and not one with a 5 point plan that had no substance.
Yesterday evening, on November 6, 2012, our nation witnessed history unfold a second time – the 1st African American President was re-elected to serve a second term…to keep the nation moving forward.
