It was only five months ago when everyone preached and promised New Year revelations, and professed their new outlook on life and beyond. Fitness gyms, personal trainers, and weight loss programs were promoting the latest and greatest answer to New Year success.
I began to notice the influx of infomercials on rotating schedules of convenience grabbing the attention of midnight wanderers in search of a midnight snack. It’s like clockwork, every year around the first of January until about now…I’m startled in the midst of my ninja walk as I return from the stairway to glutton with a bowl of ice cream, cake or pie leftover from the holiday festivities, by a loud applause streaming through my television speakers as the infomercial host speaks, “Are you tired of countless diets that don’t work. We have the solution just for you –just shake this seasoning and BAM…you’ll discover the old you”. I’m instantly drawn into the message because I want to know the answers to discovering my old me.
So here I am, five months into this not so new year, sitting on my couch, surfing the channels on my television and instantly become drawn to another infomercial enticing me to join the revolution and hip hop my way to sculpted abs. As I reach for my cell phone to call before the time clock ends on the discounted offer, my eyes catch a glimpse of the piles of workout DVDs and exercise wonderment waiting for my attention in the corner of the room. Guilt-ridden, I give the television a side eye roll and switch the channel abruptly.
The instant inventory of all of my late night purchases made me reevaluate my haste and promise — leaving me to wonder how many other infomercial addicts have fallen into an entrapped universe of fitness overload. Hmmmm!
